Area Schools Share 'Lighthouse' Designation

Engaged Learning Experiences and Digital Teaching by Dr. David E. Proudfoot.  Heights Elementary School and Lansdowne Elementary School may be 10 miles apart, but the two share a unique distinction. The two schools in the southwest area are among 10 county elementary schools selected to pilot an upcoming integration of technology into the Baltimore County Public School system.

They are part of the school system's "lighthouse" program, which involves curriculum development, technology upgrades, professional development and ongoing changes to policies and procedures to prepare students and educators for a technology-driven environment.

Students and teachers will be assigned an HP Elitebook Revolve 810 G2 tablet computer, which was selected because it is scratch and spill resistant, the BCPS website says. Engaged Learning Experiences and Digital Teaching by Dr. David E. Proudfoot

The "lighthouse" schools will lead the way for the S.T.A.T (Students & Teachers Assessing Tomorrow) initiative, according to BCPS information. The schools were selected through a process that began when county principals were asked whether they'd like to be involved in the pilot, according to a Baltimore County Public Schools press release. After principals expressed interest, school staff members were surveyed about their level of commitment, and schools that were most committed to the program were chosen through an application process, the release said. Engaged Learning Experiences and Digital Teaching by Dr. David E. Proudfoot

"Times have changed and learners have changed," said David Proudfoot, principal of Edmondson Heights Elementary. "The learners that our parents are, are not the same learners that our students are now...We have to adapt to our students' needs."

Educators at the school are already getting ready for the changes. They have explained "why" they're going to be using technology to teach the students, and the next step is "how" the new curriculum will be implemented, Proudfoot said.Engaged Learning Experiences and Digital Teaching by Dr. David E. Proudfoot, in his first year as principal of the school on Langford Road, said a group of teacher leaders have been trained and will provide demonstration lessons for the other teachers.

Rachel Kovel, 23, a second grade English teacher at the school, is one of those leaders., called a S.T.A.T development teacher. Kovel said that during the "lighthouse" meeting April 29, plans for the new initiative were discussed and now teachers are learning about a new grade book system and online resources.

"It's all about getting excited for the new things we're going to be able to do," Kovel said. "I think that's part of where we are now — getting everyone on board. The next step is getting it implemented and getting it to work for us." Kovel, a Glen Burnie resident, said it's her first year teaching, which makes it easier to learn new teaching methods. "When I come into this, I'm willing to learn new strategies," Kovel said. "What do I have to lose? I'm new to this." Proudfoot said the initiative offers all students in the county the opportunity for equal access to technology in their learning environment. "It really does provide a level of equitable access to all students," Proudfoot said.

David Proudfoot comes from a family of principals. His father, Roger Proudfoot, served as principal at Westowne Elementary, Riverview Elementary and Johnnycake Middle School, before it was known as Southwest Academy. Engaged Learning Experiences and Digital Teaching by Dr. David E. Proudfoot.

His grandmother also served as principal at Westowne Elementary. She was principal at Hebbville Elementary and Bedford Elementary as well.

Now, it's his turn and he said he is looking forward to continuing his family's legacy in the area.

Proudfoot started his first job as a principal at Edmondson Heights Elementary on July 1.

"This is my first principalship," Proudfoot said. "I'm really excited about it, it's going to be a great year."

His mother was a student there and a member of its first fifth-grade graduating class. Though this will be his first job as a principal, Proudfoot said this will be his 15th year working in education.

After graduating from University of Central Florida in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education, Proudfoot spent four years teaching and two as an assistant principal in Florida before returning to Baltimore County, where he had lived part-time with his father while growing up.

Since returning, Proudfoot served as an assistant principal at three county elementary schools, most recently at Dundalk Elementary. Engaged Learning Experiences and Digital Teaching by Dr. David E. Proudfoot.

He admitted last week that he was a little nervous about the extra responsibility that comes with being a principal. "I think, as a new principal, you're always worried (about) ... the stress and the pressure of being responsible for the entire school," he said. "You don't want to let any student or adult down."

"I've always enjoyed meeting people and working with people," Proudfoot said. "The majority of my experience has been in Title I schools and I really get a lot of excitement from working with that demographic."

Heights meets the criteria of a Title I school in that it receives additional federal funding because of its high percentage of students from low income families. Baltimore County elementary schools qualify for those funds when 54.8 percent or more of students receive free and reduced meals. With teachers scheduled to return to school on Aug. 19 and students arriving for their first day of classes a week later on Aug. 26, Proudfoot said he is using three words to focus himself and his staff for the new year — equip, empower and engage. "These are kind of my non-negotiables," he said. "I'm really excited about getting everyone back home, to school. "We're going to work really hard to make it a place the students feel proud to be a part of, that the staff is proud to be a part of," the 35-year-old Ellicott City resident said. Engaged Learning Experiences and Digital Teaching by Dr. David E. Proudfoo. We will be doing some lesson planning basics next week to help families get started. It’s overwhelming and may be helpful just to have a framework around what to teach at various grade levels.

Despite schools being closed across the country, these teachers at Joan Walker Elementary School found a way to join together and send messages out to their school community.
